Double Chai THIS Wednesday, February 10, 6:00-7:30 pm!
One more class before taking February break. Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow. This is our last class for our current elective cycle. Please note that class on February 24th will be entirely remote. This will allow us to ease back into being together after the potential of travel during the break.
High school students 16 and older, check out an intership opportunity offered in partnership with the Israeli American Council (IAC) below.
Remember to sign the Covid-19 health form before class Wednesday.
Grade 7 First Hour - Torah of Our Lives Core Class
Electives:
First Block 8th-12th only
Keeping it Together (or let’s be real, Falling Apart, Together): Jewish Strategies for Coping in a Crazy Time - Batya Ellinoy
In this elective, we will create a safe and brave place for you to connect, share stories, and encouragement. We will explore a number of tools that can be used during stressful times as well as what our Jewish tradition has to offer on the subject of our health and well-being. This is an opportunity to support one another and learn how real, practical and uplifting Jewish tradition can be in the face of adversity.
The Story of Black/Jewish Relations in America - Rabbi Micah
This past summer, protests swept America in the name of Black Lives Matter, renewing the call of racial justice in our country. As we enter Black History Month in February, join Rabbi Micah to learn about connections between the African-American and Jewish communities in the United States. Gain a deeper understanding for how these two historically persecuted communities have both been allies and how they have encountered areas of tension. We will also explore the ways in which African-American Jews shape identities firmly rooted in both communities.
Second Block 7th-12th
Confirmation: Big Questions Jews Ask - Rabbi Karen and Rabbi Micah (10th Graders automatically in class, open to all high school students during this 4 week elective period)
10th grade students will begin to prepare for Confirmation, the experience of in-depth study with the rabbis, by exploring core questions of Judaism. In Confirmation, 10th graders shape their own beliefs and affirmations about Judaism. This period of study culminates in the spring with the Confirmation Service, shaped and led by the students. All 10th grade students will be part of this class. (Note that this elective during this 4 week period is open to all 9th-12th graders) The Art of Freedom - Josh Conescu
When the Israelites crossed the Sea of Reeds, the first thing they did was sing and dance. This elective will explore “Freedom” through the visual arts, music and poetry. We will spotlight The Migration Series by African American artist, Jacob Lawrence. Lawrence’s paintings document The Great Migration of Southern blacks to the North in the 1920’s and 1930’s. We will compare this southern exodus to the Israelite exodus from Egypt; also looking at contemporary Jewish painting and poetry. Participants will create an “Artist’s Response Journal” based on the work we explore. Yoga - Rabbi Micah
Done with screen time, tired necks, backs and legs? Rejuvenate as Rabbi Micah leads yoga with a Jewish twist. Add strength to body, mind and spirit in a class will connect vinyasa flow with Jewish music, guided meditation, and stretching. This is a great way to release stress, increase flexibility and strength. Wear comfortable clothes.
