The Adult Education Committee hopes to inspire a community of learners and a learning community. We hope that you will be surprised / enlightened / uplifted / enriched / inspired / intrigued by the offerings this year. In 5772, there are entirely new programs along with those back by popular demand, there are so many opportunitiestto be involved, from one-time talks to multisession courses, from how-to-parent to considerations-of-God.
Beginning Hebrew with Debby Elk is back after a hiatus of some years. Many congregants have learned Hebrew with Debby, and we are so happy to have her back. Depending on the class participants, Debby may follow the basics with Prayerbook Hebrew. One of our themes this year is "Parenting Through the Stages." We are introducing two wonderful courses for parents, provided by Hebrew College. The acclaimed Nosh & 'Drash Sunday morning programs feature fascinating presentations on diverse topics from great speakers. Learn from the extraordinary expertise of our members and others at these free stand-alone sessions. Presentations will include: Poetry, Music and the Creative Process with Judy Katz Levine, 50th Anniversary of the Peace Corps: an Insider's View with Marcie Krasnow, and Israeli Culture Today with Pam Weil, all Temple members or staff. We also hope to have some renowned outside speakers on fascinating topics related to parenthood, food justice, and WikiLeaks! This year, nosherie will be provided by Sisterhood (thanks Sisterhood!).
We are honored to have substantial teachings provided by clergy - our own fabulous teachers Rabbi Zoob and Rabbi Wildstein and Cantorial Soloist Rachel Reef-Simpson; and also Rabbi Judith Kummer and, as our Scholar in Residence, the acclaimed Rabbi Arthur Green, author of the recent Radical Judaism.
This will be the second year both for our hard-studying Meah Gimel students, and for our exciting and ambitious Talmud Study Seminar.
Meah is a two-year course, closed to new students, but Talmud Seminar is an evolving series, open to anyone. Talmud study was inaugurated last year with a teaching by Rabbi Zoob. This was followed by Rabbi Kummer sharing some of the great stories and the teachings that emanated from them. In early September, we offer a double-session of more classic stories, due to popular demand. In March, Rabbi Wildstein will pick up Talmud Study with a 7-part course in Mishna, the earliest collection of Jewish law following the Torah and the foundation of the Talmud. Interesting selections from each of the tractates will be examined,
Join in anywhere, anytime.
See you in shul, see you in school.
Sincerely,
Fred Davis
