High Holiday Music

We are delighted to welcome Cantorial Soloist, Jenny Labow, to our bima, along with piano accompanist, Michael McLaughlin.  We will also be joined on Kol Nidrei by returning cellist Dan Ryan.

Rabbi Karen and Rabbi Micah have a special connection with Jenny as they were honored to lead services with her during their time at Temple Israel in Tulsa. She has a beautiful voice and a kind heart, and they look forward to partnering with her in shaping spiritually uplifting Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur worship.

Jenny Labow, Cantorial Soloist

Jenny Labow was born in Toronto, Canada, and moved to the United States with her family when she was 12 years old. Her father taught at Oklahoma State University, and she went on to Major in Bass Clarinet Music Performance at OSU. While studying there, she became involved in singing live music, as well as recording albums, which lead to a small recording contract in Nashville, TN.  Jenny grew up at Holy Blossom Temple in Toronto. She became a Bat Mitzvah, and was confirmed at Temple Israel in Tulsa, OK, and has since returned there to lead Friday night services, as well as teach Religious School on Sundays. Jenny served as the alto section leader in Temple Israel’s High Holiday Choir for the past several years. She is currently a music teacher at Oklahoma Music Academy in Tulsa, specializing in piano and guitar for beginners, and voice. Jenny is active in the Tulsa Jewish community, and is pursuing her studies as a Cantorial Soloist.  Jenny is a member of the Guild of Temple Musicians.

Michael McLaughlin, Accompanist

Pianist and accordionist, Michael McLaughlin has been a part of the Boston Klezmer and Jewish music scene since 1995 as a performer, arranger and composer for The Shirim Klezmer Orchestra, and Naftule’s Dream. Over the years he has worked with members of The Klezmer Conservatory Band, and The Klezmatics, while recently bringing Klezmer music to the New England region with Klezwoods and the Yaeko Miranda Quintet. Michael holds a D.M.A in Music Composition from the New England Conservatory (’09), a MA in Music Composition from Tufts University (’99), and a BM from Berklee College of Music (’93). He was a recipient of a Mass Cultural Council Artist Grant award in composition. (’01) He has played music and accompaniment at various local Reform congregations including Temple Israel of Boston. Michael directs the Tufts Klezmer Ensemble, The Jumbo Knish Factory, and teaches courses in musicianship and theory.

High Holiday Choir
